Jupiter u kultnim zajednicama na prostoru istočnog dela rimske provincije Dalmacije / Jupiter’s representations in cult congregations discovered in the eastern part of the Roman province of Dalmatia

Abstract

On the territory of the eastern part of the former Roman province of Dalmatia, eight votive monuments dedicated to the deity Jupiter have been preserved to date. These monuments predominantly attest to Jupiter’s cult congregations, with only one example depicting Jupiter and Liber together and jointly incorporated into the cult congregation of the god Terminus. In seven of the eight monuments, Jupiter is identified through the IOM letter designation, while in a single case the deity appears without any attributes. The occurrence of such an instance within an otherwise independent Jupiter cult suggests an incomplete process of Romanisation and an only partial replacement of the earlier native supreme deity by Jupiter. The devotees associated with these cult congregations belonged to the upper civil strata and held either temporary or permanent residence in the region.
