- If the main text is written in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, the summary should be written in another foreign language (English, German, or French). If the main text is written in one of the three foreign languages, the summary should be written in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. Along with the summary, the paper title should be translated into a foreign language (English, German, or French).

- Literature: Last name, year, page number (e.g., Truhelka 1891, 25). If many authors or sources are cited in a single footnote, they are separated by a semicolon [;] – e.g., Bojanovski 1988, 65; Mesihović 2007, 456; Paškvalin 2012, 56–57; Busuladžić 2011, 46–47.
- If many bibliographic units of the same author are cited one after another, they should be ordered chronologically and separated by a semicolon, e.g., Domić Kunić 2006, 61; Domić Kunić 2020, 107.
- If many works of the same author from the same year are cited, they are marked with letters a, b, c... after the year of publication and separated by a semicolon Mesihović 2011a, 32; Mesihović 2011b, 324; Mesihović 2011c, 78.
- When citing works of two authors, their last names are separated by a comma, e.g., Matijašić, Petešić 2018, 24.
- When citing works of four or more authors, only the first author is cited followed by an abbreviation et al. E.g., Beljan et al.
- Narrative sources: An abridged form of author’s name (for Greek sources use the abbreviation form according to Liddell & Scott [LSJ], whereas for Latin sources Oxford Latin Dictionary [OLD] abbreviation form should be used), book number, chapter number, and data number within the chapter, e.g., Pat. 2. 114. 4; Dio 48.41.7; Strabo 7.5.2. In the case of classical authors with numerous preserved works, the abbreviated title of their work should also be provided App. Illyr. 13.37; Plin. HN 3.144; Suet. Aug. 27.1.
- Epigraphical inscriptions: Name of the inscription (e.g., CIL03 3201=10159+3198, b=10156b.)
- Appendices followed by the text should be referred to by the author in brackets stating the name of the appendix and its number. Images should be referred to by the abbreviation “Fig.”, tables of images by the abbreviation “T.”, maps by the word “map”, tables by the abbreviation “Tab.”, and catalog units by the abbreviation “ACNO” meaning “Accession Number” (Fig. 1), (T. 1), (map 1), (tab. 1), (ACNO 1).

- Bibliographic units should be sorted in alphabetical order.
- Abbreviations should be written first, followed by sources and literature.
- If the same author is cited several times, their works are cited according to the year of publication.
- If many works of the same author from the same year are cited, they are marked with letters a, b, c... after the year of publication (in the bibliography as well as in notes).
- When citing sources: Name of the source, full name of the book (italic), name of the translator or editor in the bracket (the first letter of the author’s name should be abbreviated and written in with an upper-case letter, while the full last name should be written in small caps), place and year of publication. (e.g., Tacitus, Annales, (translation J. Jackson), Cambridge (Massachusetts) – London 1970; Theophanes Confessor, The Chronicle of Theophanes Confessor, (translation C. Mango – R. Scott), New York 1997.
- Books:
- Author's last name and year of publication (-), the first letter of the name, author's last name, name of the book (italic), publisher’s name, and year. (e.g., Bratož 2007 – Bratož, Rimska zgodovina 1, Zveza zgodovinskih društev Slovenije, Študentska založba, Filozofska fakulteta Univerze v Ljubljani, 2007).
- In the case of institutions whose departments publish several publications (e.g., Center for Balkan Studies of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina), citations should be done as follows: Author's last name and year of publication (-), the first letter of the name, author's last name, name of the book (italic), title and series number, title and subseries number, publisher’s name, and year. (e.g., Bojanovski 1974 – I. Bojanovski, Dolabelin sistem cesta u rimskoj provinciji Dalmaciji, Djela XLVII, CBI 2, Akademija nauka i umjetnosti Bosne i Hercegovine, 1974).
- Books with two authors are cited as follows: Mesihović, Šačić 2015 – S. Mesihović, A. Šačić, Historija Ilira, Univerzitet u Sarajevu, 2015 (the same principle applies for books with three authors).
- Books with four or more authors are cited as follows: Horvat et al. 2007 – M. Horvat, J. Lamut, J. Medved, M. Culiberg, B. Djurić, B. Vičič, Sela pri Dobu, Arheologija na avtocestah Slovenije 2, Zavod za varstvo kulturne dediščine Slovenije, 2007.
- Book chapters require to cite the full title of the book that the chapter was cited from, as well as the name of the editor, before the name of the cited work, e.g., Gračanin 2015 – H. Gračanin, Kraj antike na hrvatskim prostorima, in Nikolić Jakus, Z. (ed.), Nova zraka u europskom svjetlu: Hrvatske zemlje u ranom srednjem vijeku (oko 550 – oko 1150), Matica Hrvatska, 3–36.
- Book with numerous issues: Harris 1997 – E. C. Harris, Principles of archaeological stratigraphy, Academic Press, 19972 (the number at the end is added depending on the issue).
- Articles:
- Author's last name and the publication year (-), the first letter of the name, author’s last name, article title, title and series number in italic (journal), title and subseries number (if applicable), publisher's name and year, page number. Example 1: Raunig 2005 – Raunig, Japodsko naselje (?) na gradini u Ripču, Godišnjak XXXIV, Centar za balkanološka ispitivanja 32, Akademija nauka i umjetnosti Bosne i Hercegovine, 2005, 151–180; Example 2: Basler 1958 – Đ. Basler, Bazilike na Mogorjelu, Naše starine V, Zemaljski zavod za zaštitu spomenika kulture i prirodnih rijetkosti Narodne Republike Bosne i Hercegovine, 1958, 45–62. Journal names are not abbreviated. For example, GZM is incorrect. The full title of the publication should be provided: Glasnik Zemaljskog muzeja Bosne i Hercegovine.
- If the article has two, three, or more authors, the same rule applies as in the case of books.
- An article in the collection of papers: Paškvalin 2002 – V. Paškvalin, Grad Jajce i njegovo bliže područje pri kraju antike i na početku kasne antike s osobitim obzirom na kršćanstvo, in Lovrenović, D. (ed.), Jajce (1396–1996): Zbornik radova sa znanstvenog simpozija u povodu 600. obljetnice spomena imena grada Jajca, Jajce, 5–7 December 1996, Dom štampe dd Zenica, 2002, 17–29.

If illustrations are adopted from previously published literature, the bibliographic unit is cited in brackets:

It should be noted that previously published images were additionally processed for the purpose of the manuscript:

- If authors opt for a table as an illustrative appendix, it should be added after the text. Each table must contain a measurement.
- Minimum photo and map resolution should be 300 dpi, and the resolution of drawings should be 600 dpi. Illustrative appendices should be submitted as part of the text, or optionally or upon the request of the editorial board, the author can submit images as a separate file with clear instructions about the exact location of the images in the manuscript. The following formats are acceptable: .jpg, .tif, .psd, .fh, or .ai.
- Appendix number (image, map, table, etc.) should correspond to the text size, on the contrary, the editorial board reserves the right to accept the manuscript and consult the author regarding this matter. Authors are obliged to obtain permission to use all illustrations they are not authors of and they are obliged to cite them.
